When we look back at AR ten years from now we’ll laugh

WebAR is revolutionizing the space of AR - putting it into the hands of mass consumption

‘beep-beep-beep…. eeee …. oooo’ - that’s the sound that we used to hear every time we wanted to connect to the internet during the dial-up phase. It meant your phone (yes landline!) was unavailable for the entirety that you were connected. To many of us that seems like ages ago, and some of you may not have even been around that long ago. Now did you know that the dial-up internet was created in the 80s? Then why did it only become popular in the early 90s? The reason for that is the access was limited. People didn’t generally have a PC at home until they became mass-produced and more affordable.

We see the same thing happening over and over again with new technologies. Until the access is nearly frictionless, it’s hard to see something become heavily adapted.

And Augmented Reality is no stranger to this theory.

While many of us have tried AR apps, there are still a large amount of the general popularity who have not. Now with WebAR, everything will be changing. ARKit and ARCore made AR apps more accessible to more developers, by making it easier to create such technology. And now WebAR will do the same, to reach anyone, without having to worry about that user having a performant smartphone with ARCore installed. Now the capabilities that ARKit and ARCore offered to developers, can also be found through web technology. Another main barrier has been convincing users to download an app just to test out an AR Gimick. After all, we can’t all build Pokemon Gos.

Imagine an internet experience where you no longer have to open up your phone’s browser, search through the results and find the data you need. The information is often siloed and getting it requires doing multiple searches to get what we need. If you’ve ever looked at a bus schedule telling you the bus should be arriving, and then you look down the empty street, you can understand this frustration. Now, imagine a world where you just take your phone, scan something and the information you want appears right in front of you. While the WebAR solution is still only available in experimental browser mode, it is predicted that early next year it will be available for mass consumption. That is when things will get really interesting.

With AR becoming more and more accessible, the solutions we are presented will be endless. This is the beginning of the next profound shift we will experience in our lives - the shift of how we see data and use it in real life. Imagine your doctor has urged you to eat healthier to improve your health, but you don’t really know what that means. You open your fridge to find the usual junk you have in there. You pull out your phone and are suddenly presented with an environment where you see your fridge stocked with what your doctor has instructed you to eat. From there it’s just a matter of pressing a button to have those items requested from your local grocery store.

For the businesses, this is an advantage because it means people will consume their content longer. Rather than scrolling through a webpage, where bounce rates are high, they can consume your content in real life. The numbers don’t lie. In fact AR campaigns have an average view time of 75 seconds  which is 2.5 times higher than the average for radio or TV. Currently we are exposed to thousands of messages per day, so it’s hard for a business to get through to this clutter. This will revolutionise the way businesses interact with their customers and how they present their products, as audiences will spend more time consuming the content.

At NINJAR we are super excited to see where WebAR will take immersive technology and how quickly it will happen! We anticipate it will become adapted faster than the internet ever did, as we see the growth of technologies getting faster and faster. Ten years from now, we will look back on this debate of how useful AR is and laugh - as we put on our immersive glasses and walk out the door.

For companies looking to get into VR/AR/MR our Virtual Reality services offer guidance on how these technologies can enhance and support your brand strategy.
